Dance with Parkinson’s and MS is a dedicated dance class where individuals living with Parkinson’s or MS, their friends, family and carers* can collectively immerse themselves in the wonderful world of dance. Dance can bring a whole host of benefits, improving balance, co-ordination, posture and strength whilst releasing stress and anxiety. Simply attending the class can give participants a real boost to their well-being.
Dancing helps us reconnect with our bodies – a connection people living with Parkinson’s or MS may feel they have lost. Many of our dancers find the class therapeutic. It can help with confidence to move freely with a sense of escaping from some of the physical and mental aspects of the condition. Music from all genres is used at different times to improve walking, balance and other activities related to gait. Many studies have shown music can have a positive effect on both mental activity and movement. Warming up with simple hand and foot exercises, before moving on to more energetic numbers, the class includes tongue twisters with music ranging from classical to modern. Tutor Sarah Hartley will soon have you moving and grooving.
Unfortunately there are no after class refreshments currently due to Covid restrictions. The session is mainly seated with 15/20minutes of standing work at the end. However all the movement that is done standing is adapted for those individuals who wish to remain seated. Everyone is encouraged to go at their own pace. We cover a range of dance styles and the aim is to take part for the joy that dancing brings.
In normal circumstances:
Why not try a taster class first at no cost? And a friend or carer can come along too (and join in!) for a suggested donation of £1 to help cover costs.
